Steve McCabe MP is backing Beating Bowel Cancer’s call to reduce the bowel cancer screening age from 60 to 50.

Steve met with campaigners, bowel cancer patients and families, health professionals and members of the Beating Bowel Cancer charity and learnt that variations in the screening age across the UK could be leading to thousands of bowel cancer patients in their 50s having a delayed diagnosis.

 

Steve McCabe MP debated the postcode lottery system of IVF treatment in Parliament today.

The Prime Minister today set out the greatest detail to date on her plans to leave the EU at a speech at Lancaster House. She was criticised for setting out her proposals to an audience of businessmen, ambassadors and foreign diplomats rather than parliament but she did appear to concede, in the course of her speech, that parliament will have a vote on the final outcome of the negotiations. She'd previously sought to block this at the Supreme Court.

Steve McCabe MP, a member of the Work and Pensions Select Committee, was joined by a cross party group of MPs at the University of Birmingham to hear evidence from Birmingham academics and other witnesses on welfare reform and citizens income. It is part of a programme to get the committee 'on the road' and out of the closed confines of Westminster.

Parliament returned on Monday to hear the Health Secretary, Jeremy Hunt’s, Ministerial Statement on the performance of the NHS. What did we learn? The Government are continuing to bury their heads in the sand by refusing to admit the #NHSCrisis that is affecting patients across the country, including those in our very own Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

Steve McCabe MP is making the case for remaining in the EU and is campaigning across Selly Oak in the run up to the referendum.

Steve McCabe MP is backing an awareness campaign on Sepsis, attended a life threatening and relatively unknown condition, which claims the lives of 44,000 people including 1,000 children every year in the UK. 

Steve has joined up with UK Sepsis Trust in calls for both public and healthcare professionals to be more aware of this silent killer. They are calling for the Department of Health to commit to a public awareness campaign, aimed at both adults and children solely on sepsis.

As ministers prepare to make a decision on the application to lift the ban on bee harming pesticides pressure builds to keep neonicotinoids off our fields this summer.

Steve has added his name to a growing list of MPs who are opposed to lifting the ban. Steve has heard from many constituents over the past few months about their concerns that the government may lift the ban and he has been campaigning in Parliament for transparency.

Steve McCabe MP has welcomed news that NICE have approved access to a drug which tackles the underlying causes of life-limiting Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a condition that affects children.

During the 2016 Budget debate this week in the House of Commons, Steve McCabe MP criticised the Chancellor’s weak budget and his plan for Birmingham.

Steve attacked the Chancellor for failing to deliver on targets that he predicted and said after eight budgets, Osborne has run out of excuses. Steve pointed out that the budget was further proof of the Tory economic plan for Birmingham and it was clear that there is no sign of rebalancing the economy.
