Working Links - Helping young people into work

Steve McCabe MP has visited Working Links, a specialist recruitment agency, to find out firsthand how they help 16 - 24 year olds who are looking for work.

Whilst on his visit Steve met Sellyoak job seeker Haythem Jafer who was about to start work in a Customer Service job. Haythem had previously been employed but recently found himself out of work. He is studying accountancy and needs to work to make ends meet. He was referred to Working Links by his local Jobcentre.

Working Links run programmes across Birmingham – one aimed at those aged 16 – 18 that are not currently in education, employment or training and another that works alongside employers addressing the skill gaps exhibited by local applicants.

Steve McCabe MP said:

"These are difficult times and I know that young people in particular are finding it tough to break into the job market. It is heartening to know that there are organisations out there who are able to take concrete action to help people get into jobs - particularly given that the Tory-Lib Dem government is slashing the Future Jobs Fund. It's not just about having the right qualifications -  candidates need to have good interview skills and the confidence that they are up to the job.

"Working Links also have strong links with local employers. This is a great help in matching applicants to jobs"
