Veterans Day 2011

Steve organised the 4th annual Veterans Day at Swanshurst School on the 11th of July in Billesley in

Today saw the 4th annual Veterans Day at Swanshurst School, Billesley organised by Steve in conjunction with the staff at the school.

They were joined by almost a hundred veterans from many branches of the armed forces, including the Land Army, Coldstream Guards, Burma Star and Bevan Boys.

Year 9 pupils were given the opportunity to discuss the past with the veterans, and used the event to develop their understanding of the past. The event benefited their studies, by bringing their history lessons to life with personal anecdotes.

The veterans and students were joined by notable dignitaries including the Lord Mayor of Birmingham and the Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Birmingham, Colonel Anthony George MBE TD DL.  A piper led the parade, and the route was lined by pupils who gave the veterans a warm reception. The parade was followed by a vintage ambulance and bus which added to the atmosphere of the day.

Steve gives his thanks to Mosley Round Table who once again kindly agreed to pay for lunch for the veterans and to ASDA for generously sponsoring the programme for the event.

Steve said “Special thanks must go to Doug Smith at the school for being a driving force behind the event. Doug was magnificent in the way that he has helped to organise the event.”

“I am also grateful to both the veterans for sharing their personal stories and experiences, and to the pupils for listening so attentively to the veterans”.

“War is awful and we should be grateful in this country that so many of us are spared the horrors of war but that only happens because of the efforts of others. If it wasn’t for the courage and sacrifices of our veterans we would find ourselves living in a radically different situation and certainly our lives would be very different”
